Mixed Media Art
Objectives: Use pen, pencil, colored pencil, and/or watercolor to create a mixed media work of art.
Procedure
Step 1: Take a photograph of a pile of objects on a plain white background (or find one online). This can be shoes, food, sunglasses, etc. More advanced images can be used such as items in a kitchen sink, parts of a car, flowers, etc. The goal is to have multiple objects, minimum of 3 spread out throughout your composition. (Consider the size though! If there are a lot of objects with lots of details it might be too small of a drawing to accomplish well).
Step 2: Grid your photograph on http://www.griddrawingtool.com/Step1.aspx
Use 7 boxes wide for a vertical photograph, and 10 boxes wide for a horizontal photograph.
Step 3: Sketch your objects in contour line. When completed erase your grid-lines.
Step 4: Create squares and rectangles around your page... minimum of 5... all different sizes and directions.
Step 5: Choose at least 3 different materials to work with (for example, colored pencil, pencil and pen). You may also experiment with watercolor.
Step 6: Create realistic detail and shading within the squares and rectangles you have added to your composition using your mediums of choice. The areas of the drawing outside of the rectangles and squares you have created remain contour line.

If you want more of a challenge try a more elaborate composition over a portrait or a landscape! See sample below.
