Zentangle is a form of meditative doodling that has patterns, or tangles, put together to form a Zen-tangle.
What is the difference between a Zentangle and a Doodle?
Doodling is typically done out of boredom in unconfined spaces... such as random doodles on the margins in a notebook.
Zentangle is focused on creating patterns and designs in a way that creates mindfulness. It is a well-known method of reducing stress & anxiety. The repetition of creating patterns within freeform shapes will help block external stressors from entering your mind.
Materials: Do I Need Zentangle Products to Doodle?
No. You can doodle - or even do 'Zentangles' - on any paper and with any pen. For best results, choose a heavy, bleed-proof paper and fiber-tip pens, such as Sakura Micron or Artline Fine Liner.
However you may use any paper you have access to at home, and any pens you have access to. You can use thin sharpie marker. You can use a sharp black colored pencil if needed. Even pencil if you do not have access to pens!
Week 1 - Pattern Practice
Steps for Week 1:
Choose patterns from any of the samples on this website or search for your own on google. Just search "zentangle" and look at images. If you want to take this next level, you can use patterns you create from life... patterns you see in flowers, weaves, fabrics, woodgrains, etc. There is so much inspiration all around you!
Draw 12 zentangle patterns in either the 12 squares or circles you have created. You are only responsible for 12. As stated in step 2, these can be created from your own inspiration or copied from the internet.
